Ah, the tyranny of high expectations! I had heard such fantastic things about Avatar that I was really looking forward to seeing it. To maximize my potential viewing pleasure, I waited until I could watch it in IMAX 3D and finally had the opportunity to do so on Friday night.
The movie is extremely well made. The scenery is beautiful, the world is internally consistent, and the 3D which often felt gimmicky in other movies was an integral part of the movie watching experience. It looked fantastic – after a while I forgot I was wearing those silly glasses.
Unfortunately, the story itself does not hold up. The character development is minimal, the dialogue is simplistic and the plot is utterly predictable. It’s a beautifully shot movie well worth watching if only as a precursor of movies to come from a film making experience perspective, but don’t expect it to be the best movie you ever watched.
this review of Avatar is worth reading: http://www.nakedsky.com/html/Blog/?p=3
no one warned you? 🙂
I completely agree… the fantastic special effects were wasted on a disappointing plot.
except for the cool 3D, that nakedsky review (which was only in 2D) was better than the movie.
the story is simple, but the storytelling is so awesome that it beats anything else i saw in the past 5 years. also, if you dwelve into the details (i watched 4 times…) you find it's a pretty clever story, considering it is intended for all audiences.
The movie is awesome if you are 10. Try seeing Star Wars for the first time post 30.
I never liked Star Wars even as a 10 year old…
I enjoyed Avatar very much, but best picture it certainly is not. It was a very enjoyable eye-candy. Star Wars was never interesting to me (at 10 or otherwise) and believe me, I TRIED! 🙂
couldnt agree with you more fabrice, up in the air is a far better movie in terms of story…
I’ve seen this movie with the idea that it’s a movie for kids. So I didn’t had any expectations. Probably that’s why I liked watching it.
im not into lightly disguised propaganda coated in cgi so havent seen it yet. but the trailer smells of merd
